Abbotsholme alumnus awarded Nobel Prize in Economics
Abbotsholme alumnus Simon Henry Roberts Johnson has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science.
Simon Johnson, currently a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), attended Abbotsholme School from 1974 to 1980. During his time at Abbotsholme, he served as Head Boy before graduating and continuing his education at Oxford, followed by Harvard University.
Professor Johnson, along with Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson, received The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2024 "for studies how institutions are formed and affect prosperity". The laureates have demonstrated the importance of societal institutions for a country's prosperity. "Professor Johnson’s research has focused on the lasting impact of colonial institutions and how inclusive political systems are essential for long-term economic development. His studies have significantly shaped modern economic thought, providing policymakers with valuable tools to address inequality and promote sustainable growth." (Oxford University, 2024).
As a school, we are incredibly proud that an Old Abbotsholmian has been awarded the most prestigious of honors. This is a truly historic moment for Abbotsholme, serving as a powerful reminder to both current and past pupils of the remarkable achievements that an Abbotsholme education can lead to.
Being recognised as a Nobel laureate is a distinction that very few UK schools can claim for their alumni, and we are extremely proud to be among them. We will continue to celebrate our unique school, which provides its pupils with the building blocks to achieve greatness.
Simon’s success is truly inspirational to all of us, and we are thrilled to share this milestone with our community.
