After months of dedicated planning and collaboration, Abbotsholme School is proud to officially announce its partnership with the Institute of Football Academy (IOF) as we collaborate to create the UK's most advanced education and football academy. Launching in September 2025, this initiative is designed to provide student-athletes with exceptional opportunities for growth, both in the classroom and on the pitch, blending the school’s rigorous academic curriculum with elite football coaching.
In collaboration with IOF, Abbotsholme School is on a mission to become the UK’s leading independent school for football development and pathway opportunities. The programme builds on the school’s commitment to deliver a well-rounded, tailored education alongside elite football coaching, equipping students with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities to pursue professional football careers or academic pathways worldwide. Designed for both High Performance and Development players, it offers dedicated programmes for boys and girls to play football alongside their academics in a traditional and quintessential British boarding school. Students will also have the chance to earn England FA coaching and scouting qualifications, further enhancing their future prospects.
The academy offers a fully immersive learning and training experience set within Abbotsholme’s 140-acre campus in the picturesque countryside, on the Derbyshire and Staffordshire border. The programme will welcome student-athletes from the local community as well as from countries such as Canada, the USA, Scandinavia, and beyond. With ambitious development plans for state-of-the-art sports facilities—including a full-size 3G football pitch, FIFA-graded grass pitches, and a high-performance strength & conditioning centre—Abbotsholme School and IOF are dedicated to shaping the future of football in the UK.
The academy offers an exceptional player development pathway led by the IOF’s UEFA-qualified coaching staff. With extensive experience from professional academies and scouting networks, the coaches bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to guide players through a structured development programme. Our academy offers a direct route into professional football, university level-soccer, and a wide range of careers with the sports industry, all while receiving a traditional Abbotsholme education. As role models within the Abbotsholme community, they will fully embrace school traditions, including annual hikes, house singing competitions, and lambing, immersing themselves in life at Abbotsholme as true Abbotsholmians. With football integrated into their school day, they will pursue their ambitions of becoming professional players beyond Abbotsholme.
The coaching staff, composed of highly experienced football professionals with backgrounds in coaching and scouting at professional academies, are committed to providing the highest level of training and support to help each player reach their full potential. This exciting new programme ensures that players receive world-class coaching and opportunities, equipping them with the skills and experience needed to succeed at the highest levels of the game.
